Preventive Dentistry

There is no magic formula for maintaining a healthy smile. If there is a secret, it is the same thing you have been hearing your entire life – good oral hygiene, a healthy diet, and semi-annual checkups and cleanings with your dentist.

Dr. Trung Pham knows that patients who are aware of the choices they have in dentistry tend to enjoy better oral health. For this reason, he’s a strong advocate of patient education that helps you understand how to manage your oral health and make informed decisions when it’s time for treatment.

The Importance of Prevention

It seems that nearly every week we learn of a new study that shows the effects that poor oral health and chronic gum disease can have on virtually every system of your body. You may not give it a lot of thought, but imagine your mouth as the gateway to your body.

These studies prove that poor oral health puts you at risk for complications associated with heart and lung disease, diabetes, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease, to name just a few.

Keeping your teeth healthy isn’t difficult, but it is a team effort. You must commit to brushing and flossing conscientiously on your own, then support those efforts with routine exams and dental cleanings at our San Jose dental office.

Preventive Dental Exams

We recommend that patients who have no ongoing dental conditions have preventive check-ins every six months. However, we customize treatment schedules for each patient because everyone has unique needs. What this means is that we may recommend more frequent visits to ensure that your smile is as healthy as it can be.

Before we begin, Dr. Pham meets with you one-on-one to talk about your concerns and answer your questions. Next, he performs a visual exam and notes any changes since your last visit. Another part of protecting your overall health is providing you with routine oral cancer screenings. Oral cancer is aggressive, but if it's caught in its earliest stages, survival rates are as high as 90 percent.

In some cases, we may decide that an x-ray would be beneficial. You can feel comfortable knowing that we only use safe digital x-rays that minimize your exposure to radiation. We also use intraoral cameras during our exams that allow you to see in detail what we see and better understand why we recommend treatment.

Managing Your Oral Hygiene

It’s a common misconception that brushing and flossing alone is enough to prevent decay and disease. But plaque that forms on your teeth collects in the crevices your toothbrush can't reach and eventually turns into tartar, a hard substance that only a skilled hygienist can remove.

During your cleanings, one of our hygienists will check the condition of your teeth and gums to look for signs of periodontal disease, an infection of the gums. When in its early stage (gingivitis), gum disease is fairly easy to eliminate. But if you skip appointments and gum disease advances (periodontitis), we can’t cure it, just manage it with more frequent cleanings and exams.
