Crowns and Bridges
We rely on our teeth to help us speak clearly, eat and chew comfortably, and allow us to share confident smiles with others. But as the years go by, many of us suffer dental wear and tear or tooth loss that leaves us looking for solutions like dental crowns and bridges to restore the health of your teeth and the beauty of your smile.
At the office of Trung Pham, DMD, our goal is to help you maintain the health of our teeth for a lifetime. Restoring damaged or missing teeth with quality crowns and bridges help maintain the health, beauty, and function of your smile.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A crown is a dental prosthetic that is shaped like a little helmet and placed over a compromised tooth to protect it. Chewing forces are absorbed by the crown, which protects and strengthens the damaged tooth beneath it.
There's a variety of materials used for crowns, but San Jose dentist Dr. Trung Pham chooses all ceramic because the material is exceptionally strong and durable. When used in dentistry, ceramic closely resembles natural dental enamel, so the restoration blends seamlessly with surrounding teeth.
Why Do I Need a Dental Crown?
There are several instances where we might recommend a dental crown:
- A cavity is too large for a filling
- A tooth is cracked, broken, or worn down
- You need to protect a tooth after root canal treatment
- You need to restore a tooth after implant placement
- A tooth is severely discolored or poorly shaped
Dr. Pham wants you to be involved in deciding whether or not a crown is right for your needs. He explains what the problem is, how addressing it benefits your oral health and the possible consequences of choosing not to get a crown. We want you to be informed, but the final decision about treatment is always up to you.
How Do You Place a Ceramic Dental Crown?
The process for placing a crown takes place over two or three visits.
- We prepare your tooth for the crown by altering its shape slightly.
- We take impressions of the prepared tooth.
- We use the impressions to create a model of the tooth and a temporary crown.
- We send the model to a custom lab where skilled technicians fabricate your crown.
In two weeks, you return to our office, and Dr. Pham removes your temporary, adjusts your new crown for fit and proper bite, and cements it in place. With proper care that includes good oral hygiene at home and routine dental checkups and cleanings, your crown can last as long as 15 years.
When Do You Recommend a Dental Bridge?
A bridge is another dental prosthetic, but it is used to restore function and appearance after tooth loss. We typically design the bridge as a three-piece unit with an artificial tooth (pontic) suspended between two dental crowns. The crowns are secured to adjacent teeth, and the pontic sits in the open space.
If you’re dealing with tooth loss, Dr. Pham will explain the importance of tooth replacement and explain other options like dentures and dental implants. We want you to be informed about all possible solutions so you can make a confident decision about treatment.
